A Complex Engineering Puzzle
The primary challenge was engineering a climate control system to effectively manage the massive, fluctuating occupant load in a large, open-atrium-style store. The system needed to be both powerful and energy-efficient. Furthermore, the extensive stockroom, with thousands of cardboard shoeboxes, presented a high fire load, requiring a highly reliable and fast-acting fire detection and suppression system.
Innovative & Efficient
We implemented a series of high-efficiency rooftop packaged HVAC units, zoned to provide targeted cooling to different floors and sections of the store. This approach provides robust, reliable cooling for large spaces. For fire safety, we deployed an addressable fire alarm system using beam detectors in the high-ceiling retail areas for wide coverage. The dense stockrooms were protected with a combination of heat detectors and a wet-pipe sprinkler system designed for high-piled storage, ensuring rapid suppression at the source of a potential fire.
